Whether or not to treat prostate cancer conventionally is one of the major medical dilemmas we have today. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. Approximately 222,000 cases will be diagnosed this year, however most prostate tumors tend to grow slowly. They never actually threaten lives. There is no sure way to tell which tumors will grow at a more rapid rate.

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests can help find tumors many years before they cause any prostate cancer symptoms, however routine screening of men who are at average risk is currently not recommended, because there is no proof that it saves lives.

Prostate cancer treatments are particularly rugged, especially on older men. And many men end up after the treatment with sexual, bladder control or other prostate gland or prostate health problems. Many doctors instead recommend “watchful waiting” to monitor signs of prostate disease and treat it only if the signs or symptoms get worse. Smaller studies have given contrary views of the safety of this approach.

This new study looked at the natural course of the disease in the men who had chosen that option. Grace Lu-Yao of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey was the head of the study. It’s the first study involving so many older men. 50% of the men were over 75 and many of their tumors were found through the PSA tests.

As part of this study they used the U.S. government’s prostate cancer database. The researchers studied 9,017 men who were diagnosed over a period of ten years, from 1992-2002, with early-stage cancer who did not get prostate surgery, radiation or hormone therapy for at least six months. Most of the men never had any treatment whatsoever.

Ten years later only 3 percent to 7 percent of those with the low-grade or moderate-grade tumors (which are rated by how aggressive the cells appear to be) had died of prostate cancer, while 23 percent of those with high-grade tumors died. Overall, prostate cancer killed only 10 percent of the patients.

It’s thought that most of the patients are going to die from something else and because of this most of the older men with the early-stage tumors could delay any treatment. It’s not clear what should be done, if anything – whether it’s conventional prostate surgery, radiation and hormone therapy or alternative treatment. This may be true even if people are younger or have a more advanced prostate cancer. Most cases are diagnosed in men who are 68 or older, and most are in an early stage.

In any event this large study shows that a large number of men do well with no initial treatment and with no treatment long term. So this new study shows that for older men observation is a reasonable approach. Many patients do well for a long period of time with absolutely no treatment.

To sum up, older men with early-stage prostate cancer are not taking a big risk if they just keep a good eye on the progress instead of going ahead with treatment. It’s the largest study to look at this issue since the PSA blood tests to detect prostate tumors became so popular in the 1990s. The study may persuade some middle-of-the-road prostate doctors that we are over-treating prostate cancer and that PSA testing may be magnifying the problem. Finally patients have the opportunity to concentrate on adopting a healthy lifestyle and most importantly adopting a healthy diet.

Colon cancer is a type of cancer that affects the colon, rectum and
appendix areas. Also called colorectal or large bowel cancer, it ranks
no. 3 among the common forms of cancers. As much as 655,500 people
die from colon cancer around the world every year, making it second
among other types of cancers in terms of mortality rate.

Like all types of cancers, colon cancer is caused by abnormal and
uncontrolled cell division within the body particularly in the colon and
rectum area. There are suggestions that colon cancer is caused by
adenomatous polyps that can be found in the colon area, organisms
which are originally benign but can potentially become malignant over
time.

Possible Causes of Colon Cancer
A diet that is high in fat is thought to be one of the possible causes of
colon cancer among people. Doctors theorize that carcinogens are
developed through the breakdown of fat metabolism in high-fat diets.
It is noted that countries that have high occurrence rates of colorectal
cancer have diets that are loaded with fat. That is why the western
part of the world have a higher occurrence rate compared to the
people in Asia.

Another theory regarding the development of cancer is the presence
of benign colon polyps. These polyps are created when chromosomes
are damaged in the inner lining of the colon. Since chromosomes are
known to control the growth of cells, damaged chromosomes can
cause uncontrollable growth and division which are believed to be the
origin of cancer.

Because polyps are born out of damaged chromosomes, it is linked
to the development of colon cancer.

Ulcerative colitis is also pointed as a possible origin of cancer of the
colon. Ulcerative colitis is described as an enlargement of the large
intestine, and is thought to develop into colon cancer when they
become complicated. When a person has ulcerative colitis for eight
to ten years, he or she is more at risk of developing colon cancer.

A persons risk of contracting colon cancer increases as a person gets
older. In fact, most people that contract colon cancers are in the 60
and 70 age groups. There are less occurrences in the age groups
of 50 and below.

Symptoms of Colon Cancer
Similar to other forms of cancer, colorectal cancer does not manifest
any sort of symptoms in its earlier levels making it difficult to diagnose
and treat. However, when it develops into more malignant states,
sufferers of colon cancer start to feel certain symptoms.

Some organizations propose that people undergo periodic screening
for colon cancer using fecal occult blood testing and colonoscopy.
These are some symptoms that warrant testing for possible colorectal
cancer:
1.Abrupt change in bowel habits including frequency, as well as
consistency and quality of stools.
2.Presence of blood in stools.
3.Presence of mucus in stools.
4.Defecation may feel incomplete after you finish.
5.A rare occurrence of obstruction in the bowels.

Anemia, anorexia, asthenia and unexplained weight loss are considered
constitutional symptoms of colon cancer.

Cancer is one of the largest problems in the world today. Although a definite cure has not yet been found, there are various highly effective ways to fight cancer and win. This article will show you a few popular ways that cancer survivors have been able to defeat this deadly disease.

1) Eat Healthy Nutritious Foods Each Day
No single food or food substances can protect you against cancer. Scientists believe that the right combination of foods in an organic plant based diet can help fight off cancer. Evidence is mounting that the minerals and vitamins in plant based foods interact to provide extra cancer protection.

In addition to plant based foods, fruits, whole grains and beans are low calorie foods and also help to protect against weight gain. Many experts believe that weight gain is implicated in the development of cancer. Eating an organic plant based diet can help prevent weight gain and also protect against cancers. Keep in mind that the more body fat there is, the higher your risk is of developing cancer. With a substantial amount of extra body fat, your heart will have to work twice as heard in order to pump blood throughout those areas.

2) Regular Exercise for Weight Loss
Researchers have long observed the positive effects of moderate amounts of exercise on the immune system. They are now beginning to look at the effects exercise can have on the immune systems of cancer patients. In one small study, researchers found that exercising three to four times a week had increased the immune cell count of women undergoing breast cancer treatment. If you can keep a steady exercise plan you will be able to help boost your immune system and fight cancer a lot better. A few examples include jogging, power walking, light weight lifting, and even swimming. Try to keep your heart as healthy and strong as possible to increase your chance to beat cancer.

3) Reducing Stress and Staying Calm
It is well known that high levels of stress hormones suppress the immune system and reduce the ability of your body to defend or repair itself from dangerous diseases. That is why many cancer centers have started offering stress reduction therapy along with traditional cancer treatments. Meditation, visualization, yoga, and other relaxation techniques have been proven to help strengthen your immune system and assist in fighting the effects of the cancer. The main aspect to remember is that your body is literally being destroyed when you stay in a state of constant stress. Work on ways to stay calm and relax as much as possible so that your body can focus on fighting the cancer.

Always remember to consult a doctor before doing anything to fight off cancer cells. It is very important to examine all risks and gain a full understanding of what it is that you are getting yourself into. There are many more ways to fight off cancer in your body and these are only a few of the more recognized of the many.

Breast thermography is a new, non-invasive imaging procedure that utilizes infrared heat-sensing technology to detect metabolic changes in the breast. Abnormalities can be detected long before a tumor is present. Because researchers are acknowledging the importance of prevention and early detection as the keys to long term breast health, breast thermography is fast becoming an important diagnostic test to add to health care regimens. To perform breast thermography, a special camera equipped with heat-sensing, or infrared, technology takes pictures of the breasts and the images are sent to a computer. Multiple images are taken from several different angles in order to provide a three-dimensional result. These images are digitally processed by sophisticated equipment to create a detailed thermal map. Because each individual has a unique ‘thermal fingerprint,’ the images help your doctor to establish the normal thermal state of your breasts. That way, if a change occurs, a diagnosis can be determined quickly. The images reveal to the doctor whether the two breasts have the same temperature patterns and whether any areas differ from one breast to the other. Abnormalities on the infrared images, including changes in temperature, blood flow, hormone levels, or metabolic activity, may indicate current or potential tumor growth. The necessary diagnostic steps are then taken to determine the nature of the abnormalities. During a mammogram, the estimated compression weight on the breast, which can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful, can be several pounds to over forty pounds. In addition, radiation collects in the breast tissue during mammograms; the more radiation the breast is exposed to, the higher the risk of cancer. Unlike mammograms, thermography does not require compression of the breasts nor does the infrared scanning process involve radiation or contact with the body. Mammograms can only detect tumors that have already developed. In comparison, breast thermography provides images of physiological changes in the breasts that could cause future tumor growth. One such abnormal thermal pattern, estrogen dominance, can be a precursor to breast cancer. If estrogen dominance is found, hormonal levels can be balanced using natural means; thereby, preventing cancer. Breast thermography can also detect small growths – those too small to be visible on mammogram or ultrasound – because these tiny masses radiate heat. Breast thermography provides important, relevant, and necessary information about your health without exposure to radiation. This diagnostic test, which compliments clinical examination and mammography, should be added to your health care regimen. Prevention and early detection are the keys to long term breast and whole body health. By providing essential information early, breast thermography can save your life.

Colon cancer is a type of cancer that affects the colon, rectum and appendix areas. Also called colorectal or large bowel cancer, it ranks no. 3 among the common forms of cancers. As much as 655,500 people die from colon cancer around the world every year, making it second among other types of cancers in terms of mortality rate.

Like all types of cancers, colon cancer is caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division within the body particularly in the colon and rectum area. There are suggestions that colon cancer is caused by adenomatous polyps that can be found in the colon area, organisms which are originally benign but can potentially become malignant over time.

Possible Causes of Colon Cancer

A diet that is high in fat is thought to be one of the possible causes of colon cancer among people. Doctors theorize that carcinogens are developed through the breakdown of fat metabolism in high-fat diets. It is noted that countries that have high occurrence rates of colorectal cancer have diets that are loaded with fat. That is why the western part of the world have a higher occurrence rate compared to the people in Asia.

Another theory regarding the development of cancer is the presence of benign colon polyps. These polyps are created when chromosomes are damaged in the inner lining of the colon. Since chromosomes are known to control the growth of cells, damaged chromosomes can cause uncontrollable growth and division which are believed to be the origin of cancer. Because polyps are born out of damaged chromosomes, it is linked to the development of colon cancer.

Ulcerative colitis is also pointed as a possible origin of cancer of the colon. Ulcerative colitis is described as an enlargement of the large intestine, and is thought to develop into colon cancer when they become complicated. When a person has ulcerative colitis for eight to ten years, he or she is more at risk of developing colon cancer.

A persons risk of contracting colon cancer increases as a person gets older. In fact, most people that contract colon cancers are in the 60 and 70 age groups. There are less occurrences in the age groups of 50 and below.

Symptoms of Colon Cancer

Similar to other forms of cancer, colorectal cancer does not manifest any sort of symptoms in its earlier levels making it difficult to diagnose and treat. However, when it develops into more malignant states, sufferers of colon cancer start to feel certain symptoms.

Some organizations propose that people undergo periodic screening for colon cancer using fecal occult blood testing and colonoscopy. These are some symptoms that warrant testing for possible colorectal cancer:

1.Abrupt change in bowel habits including frequency, as well as consistency and quality of stools.
2.Presence of blood in stools.
3.Presence of mucus in stools.
4.Defecation may feel incomplete after you finish.
5.A rare occurrence of obstruction in the bowels.

Anemia, anorexia, asthenia and unexplained weight loss are considered constitutional symptoms of colon cancer.

Most of us know how important raw vegetables are for our health but with today’s busy lifestyles it can be difficult to consume enough of them. With the convenience of a juicer at home; however, we can reap all of the health benefits from vegetables while enjoying a quick glass of juice.

It is best to use organically-grown vegetables in order to avoid pesticides and preservatives. Because some nutrients are lost in transit from the farm to the store, try buying locally-grown produce when possible to receive the highest vitamin and mineral content. Many important vitamins and minerals are located in the skin so vegetables should not be peeled before juicing. Here are several nutritious and delicious veggies to try in your juicer.

Carrots

Carrot juice is a fantastic source of vitamin A, which is vital for maintaining the health and proper function of your eyes. Vitamin A also promotes healthy bone growth and the maintenance of healthy body tissues. The amount of carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in the liver, is indicated by the carrot’s color. Dark yellow carrots are best for juicing because of their high carotene content. Carrots are also rich in vitamin E, which is great for your skin. Carrot juice supplies the body with many other vitamins and minerals including the B vitamins, calcium, copper, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, chlorine, sulfur, and iron.

Celery

Celery is an excellent source of vitamin C. It is also a very good source of folic acid, potassium, and vitamins B1, B6, and B2. Celery is even a good source of calcium. Celery contains active compounds called pthalides, which have been shown to improve vascular health by relaxing arteries, thereby lowering blood pressure. Pthalides also reduce stress.

Beets

Both the root and leaves of beets are high in vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, and C. The leaves are actually more nutritious than the root, but are bitter. The sweet taste of the root is generally preferred in juice, but by mixing the leaves with other vegetables you can gain the nutritional content of the leaves while still creating a sweet juice. Beets are in the same family as spinach and chard and are great blood-cleansing vegetables. The root has a very high concentration of folic acid, which is important for cellular function and repair. Beets are also a great source of high-quality iron.

Cucumbers

Beneficial for both skin and hair, cucumbers contain a large amount of the mineral, silica. Silica strengthens tendons, muscles, and other connective tissue, and is also great for skin elasticity, complexion, and hair loss. Cucumbers contain quite a bit of water and are helpful for hydration. Because many nutrients are located in the skin of the cucumber, be sure to avoid those with a waxy coating, which would need to be peeled.

Spinach

A natural laxative, spinach is another common vegetable for juicing. Due to its high iron and chlorophyll content, spinach juice aids those with anemia. Spinach is also rich in calcium and other alkaline elements, which preserve the alkalinity of the blood. During pregnancy and lactation, spinach juice is valuable because of its high content of folic acid. For those with bleeding gums, spinach juice is known to be helpful.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are useful for liver detoxification because they contain two very important detoxifying trace elements, chlorine and sulfur. Because they are abundant in lycopene, tomatoes reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, including the prevention of hardening of the arteries and high blood pressure. Lycopene is also a potent antioxidant.

Whatever vegetables you choose, you’ll be assured a result that far exceeds any store-bought juice. Loaded with essential nutrients, homemade juice is one of the healthiest drinks you’ll find. Get a juicer and enjoy a glass of homemade vegetable juice today!
